Join LRMA Curator Christine Renc-Carter as she explores the new exhibitions Fall into Greatness and Habits & Habitats: Inside the Artist’s Studio with Abraham Rattner. Continuing with the museum’s fifteenth-anniversary theme, Renc-Carter will discuss works in the collection by greats such as Picasso and Legér as well as those by celebrated local artists, and she’ll give visitors a peek inside Rattner’s recreated studio. Fall into Greatness: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years

Fall into Greatness: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years pays tribute to the lasting legacy of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art while we look towards the future with great expectations. Following our summer exhibition, Paradise Found, this is the second installment in a series that celebrates the donors, artists and community who helped build the foundation of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art over the course of fifteen years.
A title layered in meaning, Fall into Greatness is inspired by all that constitutes the autumn season. It also means to be immersed in truly great things. Follow our fifteen-year journey and bask in the splendor of celebrated artists such as Pablo Picasso, George Inness, Sr., Christopher Still, Dale Chihuly and many more. Highlighting iconic works from the collection, new acquisitions are unveiled, as well as never-before-seen works. We also explore the unique relationship LRMA has with Tampa Bay Area artists as we find out what inspires the artists in our collection. Approximately thirty artists currently residing in the Tampa Bay Area that are included in the LRMA collection will be collaborating with the museum on a project that will result in an interactive component to the exhibition.
Fall into Greatness: Contemporary Prints from the Jim and Martha Sweeny Collection

Since establishing the Lothar and Mildred Uhl Works on Paper Gallery, LRMA’s collection of contemporary prints has grown exponentially. Marking LRMA’s fifteen-year anniversary, we unveil a recent acquisition of fourteen fine art prints from Jim and Martha Sweeny, who were long-time friends of Lothar Uhl and fellow print collectors. This donation includes a cross-section of major contemporary printmakers including Louisa Chase, Donald Sultan, Brad Davis, Terry Winters, Hung Liu, Howardena Pindell and Thornton Dial. The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art is honored to receive such a significant collection of prints and mixed media works by notable contemporary artists, including well-known African-American artists. Four mixed media works by Mary Proctor, Clint Griffin, and Lonnie Holly will also be included in the exhibition.
Habits & Habitats: Inside the Artist’s Studio with Abraham Rattner

Habits & Habitats is a new exhibition series that provides insights into the perspectives, daily habits, and private spaces of featured artists. This series is intended to create a personal connection to the audience by touching on particular parts of an artist’s life and thought process for a deeper level of understanding.
Inside the Artist’s Studio with Abraham Rattner is the second installment of the Habits & Habitats series, which offers a glimpse into the artist’s work space and artistic process. Through an immersive installation of Rattner’s original studio furniture, vintage photographs, personal letters and journals, take a peek inside his studios in Paris and New York. On view for the first time, original drawings and studies from the LRMA archives shed light on Rattner’s approach to different processes from self-portrait studies to major paintings and public projects.
ELEMENTAL: Fine Crafts from the Collection
October 8, 2017 – September 15, 2019 (Fine Craft Permanent Collection Gallery)
ELEMENTAL: Fine Crafts from the Collection is a new installation of sculptural works from the permanent collection based on the classical elements of the ancient Chinese tradition: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements were used for describing interactions and relationships between phenomena. The interrelationship of these classical elements is explored through contemporary fine craft mediums including jewelry, decorative arts, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and paper. This exhibition is an amalgam of ancient raw materials and modern ingenuity, in which artists stretch the boundaries of earth’s elements in metal, wood, clay, stone, glass and other natural media.
Rattner’s Contemporaries in Paris
Extended through June 17, 2018
Paris was considered the hub of creative expression in the 1920s and 1930s, and Abraham Rattner was in the middle of it all. Well-known artists influenced Rattner’s burgeoning style and worked alongside him. This exhibit showcases how the Parisian artists of the time influenced Rattner’s works, as well as art history as a whole, featuring prints by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Paul Signac, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró and Abraham Rattner.
From the Collection: Artists of Hillsborough County
On view through August 2018
Following the success of the Artists of Pinellas County exhibition, the museum proudly presents a companion show, Artists of Hillsborough County. Tampa, the principal city of Hillsborough County, largely advances visual arts through its centers of higher education, including the University of Tampa and the nationally known Graphic studio program at the University of South Florida. These institutions attract leading artists as educators, produce successful students who find their own artistic expression and foster exploration of technical and aesthetic skills in contemporary art.

About the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art
Opened to the public in 2002, LRMA is a modern and contemporary art museum with a collection of more than 6,000 works of 20th and 21st century art. The nucleus of the museum’s permanent collection includes works by Abraham Rattner, a renowned figurative expressionist; Esther Gentle, Rattner’s second wife and a printmaker, sculptor and painter; and Allen Leepa, Rattner’s step-son and an abstract expressionist artist; the museum’s collections also include of works by notable 20th century artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger and Henry Moore, as well as many Florida and Southeastern U.S. artists. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, a distinction held by only 6 percent of all U.S. museums.
LRMA is located just west of U.S. Highway 19 at 600 E Klosterman Road, on the Tarpon Springs Campus of St. Petersburg College. Museum hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 – 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and free to children, students and active military with ID. On Sundays, docent tours are offered at 2 p.m.(included with admission fee). The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Isabelle’s Museum Store is open during regular business hours.
